Scientists make curious discovery about pregnancy

June 11, 2019  12:00

Scientists from the University of Western Australia managed to refute the current view that the female womb is a germ-free environment.

As part of the study, experts analyzed samples of amniotic fluid taken from 50 healthy pregnant women. It was found that traces of bacterial DNA were present in almost all samples. The bacteria were also detected in meconium of all 50 newborns.

The analysis showed that mainly amniotic fluid contained staphylococcus, as well as such typical skin bacteria as, for example, Propionibacterium acnes.

Given that neither mothers nor children showed any signs of infection, scientists suggest that colonizing the baby in the womb by bacteria is a healthy process.
